Fall is in full swing with most of the leaves gone here in the Northeast. There is something incredibly bittersweet about the fall – almost nostalgic. You say goodbye to this year’s summer memories as you slip into comfy fall sweaters and snuggle up under soft fleece blankets.
Fall is the perfect time to make more memories with apple picking, pumpkin picking, and taking in the fall foliage. It’s also the perfect time to rest up for the craziness of the holidays and start thinking about what you want the upcoming New Year to hold for you.
We often wait for New Year’s Day to take action on our New Year’s resolutions and goals. But why not head into the New Year with some momentum? Imagine how fired up we would be to really start accomplishing our goals!
One of my favorite ways to get back on track when I lose motivation is to jump into a great self-development book. It works every. Single. Time.

Here are 10 self-development books that you NEED to read before heading into the New Year. I know reading all 10 would be a luxury for us busy ladies, so pick the one that is most relevant to where you are in life and what you want to accomplish next year.
A little tip: If you don’t have the time to sit down and read, or if that’s just not your thing, you should 100% sign up with Audible. You pay a small monthly fee, but with that you get a credit to buy a new audiobook each month. In addition, you get two free audiobooks when you first sign up. I squeeze in SO many more books with Audible because I can listen to the book as I’m driving or cleaning up.
10 Must Read Books for the Self-Development Enthusiast
This book has changed my life! My husband bought it for me for Christmas last year. I have a hard copy and I also own it on Audible. I’ve listened to it at least 5 times!
This book is perfect for the woman who needs a boost in her confidence to go after what she wants in life. Your dreams don’t have to be business-oriented (like running your own business) or even big. It can be something as small as learning how to grow the “perfect tulip” as Jen Sincero explains in this book. The point is that your focus is to go after whatever makes you happy.
There are so many gems of wisdom in this book. I guarantee you’ll have a bunch of a-ha moments as you listen to or read this.
Can I just tell you that I LOVE Rachel Hollis? My husband is probably so sick of hearing me rave about her (sorry Husby if you’re reading this!). I literally just discovered her 2 months ago after deciding to finally read Girl, Wash Your Face. And oh boy, what a read!
This book is perfect for the woman who needs to reframe how she thinks. Each chapter in this book is focused on a common lie that Rachel used to tell herself, and that we women in general tend to tell ourselves. To give you an idea, the first chapter is titled “The Lie: Something else will make me happy”. She then goes on to illustrate how this is a lie and how to think differently.
Rachel will draw you in with her colorful storytelling. She gets so incredibly personal in this book that you cannot help but relate to her. Girl, Wash Your Face will make you laugh, cry, and most importantly, it will inspire you to change for the better.
Don’t let the published date of this book make you think its out of touch (it was originally published in 1936). It was WAY ahead of it’s time. I picked up this book from an actual bookstore (remember those?) about 10 years ago when I was really struggling with anxiety.
It was just what I needed. I keep this book in the top drawer of my nightstand and refer to it whenever I need a reminder to stop worrying.
This book is perfect for the woman who is constantly worrying about seemingly everything! This book is like a kick in the butt in the best way possible. It will make you see how much you actually worry, why it’s bad and why you need to stop, and then how to actually do it.
Trust me friend, the advice that is given is priceless and it WORKS.
My manager at my very first job out of college recommended this book to me. I loved it so much that I printed out the The Four Agreements and posted it on my wall at work so that I would never forget them.
This book is perfect for the woman who feels like she isn’t good enough. Understanding and living by the Four Agreements will bring you peace because at the end of the day, you’ll have done what is right and given your best. You’ll be able to fall asleep with a light heart.
This book isn’t for women who aren’t into spiritual teachers or ancient wisdom. I don’t know if Don Miguel Ruiz is looked at as a spiritual teacher, but that’s how I view him. Also, this book is based upon the teachings of an ancient people named the Toltecs.
This book is a quick read, but full of wisdom.
This book will motivate you to think more positively. It definitely got me excited for all of the things I could attract into my life through the power of thought.
This book is perfect for the woman who doesn’t mind “woo woo”-type reads and who needs inspiration to believe that obtaining what she wants, no matter how crazy it may seem, is totally possible.
Remember that the mind is a powerful thing. Your actions follow your thoughts which is why the Law of Attraction really works.
I originally bought this book to become better at organization and tidying up. I’ll be honest, I still need a lot of work in those departments! But what I got from this book was something that I didn’t expect.
This book is perfect for the woman who is trying to find happiness in material things. Maybe you’ve accumulated a bunch of stuff over the years that is filling up your closets and basement. You have clutter from all of the things you bought that made you happy in the moment, but no longer bring you joy.
Marie Kondo will teach you why you need to let these things go, how to do it, and how to take proper care of the things that actually bring you happiness.
I am not a religious person, but I do believe in God and I have my own personal relationship with Him. It’s not governed by rules, just like my relationships with my husband, family, and friends do not have rules. That being said, I turned to this book when my life was beginning to unravel some years ago.
This book is perfect for the woman who is going through a really tough season and needs some comfort and reassurance that everything is going to be ok. Reconnecting with God, or any higher power for that matter, reminds us that we are not in this alone and that there is a plan for us.
Joel Osteen, ever the optimist, writes books that are light but still manage to pack a lot of power.
I’m a big believer that working a 9-5 job is not the only way to achieve financial success. In fact, I believe that to achieve BIG financial success, you should completely ditch the 9-5!
This book is perfect for the woman who is looking for a career that she is passionate about and that will help her achieve the life she’s always dreamed of. Tim Ferris will inspire you to think outside of the box and teach you how to work smarter, not harder.
Just like Dale Carnegie’s book, Think and Grow Rich was published in the 1930s, but it’s principles still apply today. I decided to read this book because I kept hearing that all of the successful people throughout history, like William Howard Taft and Oprah Winfrey, had read this book and attribute much of their success to the principles that are taught in it.
This book is perfect for the woman who wants financial success and who needs guidance in what habits she needs to create to get there. Napoleon Hill outlines every single trait a person needs in order to achieve success. And if you actually follow the advice given in this book, you are guaranteed to succeed!
I’ve always heard that successful people wake up early and have a routine. But since I never viewed myself as a morning person, I never really tried it. Then I heard about this book. I decided to give it a read to find out what all this morning routine talk was about. And I’m glad I did!
This book is perfect for the woman who feels like she doesn’t have enough time in the day. You may say you’re not a morning person. But, if you read this book you’ll realize that if Hal can overcome all of the crazy stuff that happened to him, then you can 100% wake up early in the morning. Hal will not only inspire you to become a morning person, but he’ll teach you how to look forward to waking up early.
This book will help you become more centered, grounded, and calm.
There you have it! The list of my all-time favorite self-development books. If you feel like you don’t have the time, you seriously need to give Audible a try. It’s a game changer.
It would be tough to read all of these books by the end of the year. Besides, not all of them will apply to you anyway. But I promise that picking up and reading the one that speaks to you the most will change your life!
